Tony Giles OBE
20/11/2023The Agricultural Economics Society notes with sadness that Professor Tony Giles OBE has passed away. Tony Giles had a long and distinguished career and was Professor of Farm Management at the (now) School of Agriculture, Policy and Development (formerly the Department of Agricultural Economics), University of Reading. Tony’s contribution to the Society was considerable, including time as archivist (1996–2003), Programme Secretary (1970–1981) and President in 1987-88. His Presidential Address to the Society - ‘No Fixed Address’ - challenged the profession to adapt and maintain its identity in a world of changing agricultural and rural policies and priorities. He will be remembered as a perceptive agricultural economist who chronicled the development and progress of the AES and for this we are much indebted. Tony was the recipient of the Society’s Award for Outstanding Contribution in 2004. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and many friends within the Agricultural Economics Society.
